who, whom, that, which等引导的定语从句,连词本身在从句中充当主语、宾语等本讲将要讲解的是副词性用法,即在从句中充当状语(包括时间、地点、原因等)为引导学生回归课本,我们还是从课本的原句为切入点,通过观察,发现规律。

以下各句均摘自同步课本原文,观察并说出下列各句中划线部分在句子中充当什么成分,引导词(关系副词)在从句中又作什么成分1.It was a time when the Chinese people were divided geographically。

.2.Emperor Qinshihuang united the seven major states into one unified country where the Chinese writing system began to develop in one direction

.3.There are many reasons why this has been possible, but one of the main factors has been the Chinese writing system.

4.These were animal bones and shells on which symbols were carved by ancient Chinese people.5.It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer

to whom I went for advice.通过观察,我们发现:1)关系副词 when 在定语从句中作时间状语(如句 1 );关系副词 where 在定语从句中作地点状语(如句 2 );关系副词

why在定语从句中作原因状语(如句3)。2)在“介词+which/whom”引导的定语从句中,which用于指代物(如句4);whom用于指代人(如句5)。

一、关系副词(when, where, why)引导的定语从句1.when引导定语从句时,先行词为表示时间的名词,关系词在从句中作时间状语【例1】She can never forget the day 。

when she first entered our senior high school.她永远不会忘记第一次进入我们学校的那一天【例2】Ill never forget the day when I was trapped in a burning bus。

.我永远不会忘记我被困在燃烧着的车子里的那一天2.where引导定语从句时,先行词为表示地点的名词,关系词在从句中作地点状语【例3】After living in Paris for fifty years, he returned to the small town 。

where he grew up as a child.在巴黎生活了50年后,他回到了儿时成长的那个小镇【例4】The stadium where the athletes work out is not far from here.。

运动员们锻炼的体育馆离这里不远【特别提醒1】 where还可用在表示抽象意义的地点名词后,如situation, stage, point, case, position, condition等【例5】

The situation has reached the point where both their parents are to be called in.事情发展到如此地步,不得不请双方家长来一趟了。

3.why引导定语从句时,先行词通常是reason, 关系词在从句中作原因状语I dont know the reason why he didnt turn to his good friend for help yesterday.。

我不知道昨天他为什么没向他的好朋友求助。The reason why he failed the exam was that he was too careless.他考试不及格的原因是他太粗心了。

二、关系代词和关系副词的判断表示时间、地点及原因的名词作先行词时,定语从句可用关系代词引导,也可用关系副词引导如果关系词在定语从句中作状语,应用关系副词;如果关系词在定语从句中作主语或宾语,则应用关系代词。

【例6】Do you remember the days when we chatted with each other all night?(when在从句中作时间状语)  你还记得我们整夜聊天的那些日子吗?

【例7】Do you remember the days that/which we spent together on the farm?(that/which在从句中作spent的宾语)你还记得我们在农场一起度过的那些日子吗?

【例8】The reason why/for which you failed was that you had not followed your mothers advice. (定语从句中缺少状语,用

why或for which, why作原因状语)你失败的原因是你没有听你母亲的忠告【例9】I wont listen to the reason that/which you have given us。

. (定语从句中缺少宾语,用that/which,不用why)  我坚决不听你给我们提供的那个理由【随堂演练2】①It happened in November  the weather was wet and cold.。

②The reason  he explained at the meeting was not sound.③The reason  he was late was that he missed his train.

④Id like to live in the house  there is plenty of sunshine.⑤This is the house  was built by my grandfather forty years ago.
